CVE-2026-13439 Security Alert: CRITICAL Vulnerability

Urgent: CVE-2026-13439 requires immediate attention.

· 7 min read

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-13439 is a critical authentication bypass and privilege escalation issue in the Easy Form Builder by WhiteStudio WordPress plugin, affecting versions up to and including 4.0.11. The flaw lets an unauthenticated attacker reset the password of any known WordPress user, including administrators, by abusing a public session identifier and a publicly reachable nonce refresh endpoint. If your site uses this plugin, treat it as an immediate incident response item.

Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.8)
KEV: No
Exploited in the wild: No known public reports at this time

Immediate Action

  • Disable or remove the plugin now if you cannot patch immediately. If the site is business-critical, take it offline or put it behind maintenance mode while you remediate.
  • Upgrade immediately to the first fixed release from the vendor. If the safe version is not yet confirmed, use the latest available version and verify the changelog or advisory: vendor advisory / release notes.
  • Rotate all WordPress admin passwords and any accounts that may have been exposed, especially if the plugin was publicly accessible.
  • Review recent user account changes for unexpected admin creation, password resets, or profile edits.
  • Temporarily restrict access to login, recovery, and REST endpoints at the WAF or reverse proxy if you cannot remove the plugin right away.
  • Preserve logs from the last 30 days for investigation before making major changes.

Affected Versions

  • easy-form-builder-by-whitestudio@<=4.0.11 vulnerable
  • easy-form-builder-by-whitestudio@TODO_FIXED_VERSION and later safe
  • If your environment uses a bundled or vendor-packaged copy, treat any build containing plugin version 4.0.11 or lower as vulnerable

Resolution Guide

WordPress / plugin remediation

# If installed via WP-CLI, update the plugin
wp plugin update easy-form-builder-by-whitestudio

# If you need to remove it immediately
wp plugin deactivate easy-form-builder-by-whitestudio
wp plugin delete easy-form-builder-by-whitestudio

# Then rotate admin credentials
wp user list --role=administrator

Manual file-based update

# Backup first
tar -czf wp-backup-$(date +%F).tgz /var/www/html

# Remove vulnerable plugin directory
rm -rf /var/www/html/wp-content/plugins/easy-form-builder-by-whitestudio

# Install the fixed version from the vendor package
# TODO: replace with exact download URL and version
unzip easy-form-builder-by-whitestudio-TODO_FIXED_VERSION.zip -d /var/www/html/wp-content/plugins/

Hardening steps

# Block the vulnerable recovery and nonce endpoints at the edge if needed
# Example Nginx rule
location ~* ^/wp-json/Emsfb/v1/(nonce/refresh|forms/recovery/efb_set_password|forms/message/add) {
    deny all;
}
# Optional: disable public REST access if your site does not need it
# Example WordPress hardening snippet (mu-plugin or theme functions.php)
add_filter('rest_authentication_errors', function ($result) {
    if (!is_user_logged_in()) {
        return new WP_Error('rest_forbidden', 'REST access restricted.', array('status' => 403));
    }
    return $result;
});

Code fix example for maintainers

// Pseudocode: do not use public sid as a password reset token
$token = wp_generate_password(32, false, false);
store_reset_token($user_id, hash('sha256', $token), time() + 3600);
// Require authenticated or email-verified recovery flow before issuing reset
if (!is_valid_recovery_request($request)) {
    return new WP_Error('forbidden', 'Invalid recovery request', array('status' => 403));
}

JavaScript / Python / Java / Linux package note

This issue is a WordPress plugin vulnerability, so npm, pip, maven, gradle, apt, and yum commands do not apply unless your deployment wraps WordPress in a larger platform. For containerized deployments, update the image that contains the patched plugin.

# Docker example: rebuild with the patched plugin baked in
docker build -t yourorg/wordpress:TODO_FIXED_VERSION .
docker run -d --name wp-fixed yourorg/wordpress:TODO_FIXED_VERSION

Detection & Verification

Check the installed version

# WP-CLI
wp plugin list --status=active | grep -i 'easy form builder\|whitestudio'

# File inspection
grep -R "Version:" /var/www/html/wp-content/plugins/easy-form-builder-by-whitestudio/

Look for vulnerable endpoints and suspicious requests

# Search web logs for the public nonce refresh and recovery endpoints
grep -R "Emsfb/v1/nonce/refresh\|Emsfb/v1/forms/message/add\|Emsfb/v1/forms/recovery/efb_set_password" /var/log/nginx /var/log/apache2

# Look for password reset activity and admin changes
grep -R "password reset\|user updated\|administrator" /var/log/* 2>/dev/null

Verify the fix

# Confirm the plugin is removed or updated
wp plugin list --fields=name,status,version | grep -i 'easy-form-builder-by-whitestudio'

# Confirm the vulnerable directory is gone or version is above the fixed release
test ! -d /var/www/html/wp-content/plugins/easy-form-builder-by-whitestudio || echo "Plugin still present"

# Confirm no unauthenticated access to the endpoints
curl -i https://example.com/wp-json/Emsfb/v1/nonce/refresh
curl -i https://example.com/wp-json/Emsfb/v1/forms/recovery/efb_set_password

Risk and Impact

This flaw can hand an attacker full administrator access without credentials. Once inside, they can install malicious plugins, create new admin users, steal customer data, modify site content, or pivot into the hosting environment if the WordPress instance has elevated filesystem or cloud permissions.

For solo developers and small teams, the blast radius is especially high because a single compromised admin account can mean complete site takeover, defacement, spam injection, or ransomware-style extortion. If this plugin is present on a production site, assume exposure until you have patched, rotated credentials, and reviewed logs.
