CVE-2026-84015 Security Alert: CRITICAL Vulnerability
Urgent: CVE-2026-84015 requires immediate attention.
· 7 min read
Executive Summary
CVE-2026-84015 is a critical remote code execution issue in Remote Access Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) EAP-TLS handling. A heap-based buffer overflow can let an unauthorized attacker send crafted network traffic and potentially execute code on the target system. With a CVSS 9.8 score, this should be treated as an emergency even though it is not currently known to be exploited in the wild and is not in CISA KEV.
For solo developers and small teams, the practical risk is simple: if your app, appliance, gateway, or embedded service exposes PPP/EAP-TLS functionality over a network, assume it is reachable and prioritize patching, isolation, or temporary shutdown until you confirm a safe version.
Immediate Action
- Patch immediately to the first fixed release from your vendor. If you do not know the fixed version yet, use the vendor advisory and set a tracking task now: Vendor advisory / security bulletin.
- Isolate the service from untrusted networks until patched. Restrict access with firewall rules, VPN-only exposure, or internal-only routing.
- Disable PPP EAP-TLS or the affected remote access feature if your product allows it. If there is a feature flag or config switch, turn it off temporarily.
- Rollback only if needed and only to a version you have verified as safe. Do not roll back to an untested build just to restore service.
- Restart the affected service after patching so the fixed code path is loaded. If the component is embedded in firmware or an appliance, schedule a maintenance reboot.
- Monitor logs for unusual authentication traffic and failed handshake spikes while you are exposed.
Affected Versions

Note: If your vendor has not yet published exact version numbers, treat all currently deployed releases as potentially vulnerable until the advisory confirms otherwise.
Resolution Guide
JavaScript (npm / yarn / pnpm)
npm ls TODO_PACKAGE
npm i TODO_PACKAGE@TODO_FIXED_VERSION
# or
yarn add TODO_PACKAGE@TODO_FIXED_VERSION
# or
pnpm add TODO_PACKAGE@TODO_FIXED_VERSION
Python (pip / pipx)
python -m pip show TODO_PACKAGE
python -m pip install --upgrade TODO_PACKAGE==TODO_FIXED_VERSION
# if installed via pipx
pipx upgrade TODO_PACKAGE
Java (Maven / Gradle)
mvn dependency:tree | grep TODO_PACKAGE
# Maven pom.xml
<dependency>
<groupId>TODO_GROUP</groupId>
<artifactId>TODO_ARTIFACT</artifactId>
<version>TODO_FIXED_VERSION</version>
</dependency>
./gradlew dependencies | grep TODO_PACKAGE
# Gradle
dependencies {
implementation("TODO_GROUP:TODO_ARTIFACT:TODO_FIXED_VERSION")
}
Linux packages (apt / yum)
apt list --installed | grep TODO_PACKAGE
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade TODO_PACKAGE=TODO_FIXED_VERSION
rpm -q TODO_PACKAGE
sudo yum update TODO_PACKAGE
Docker
docker pull TODO_IMAGE:TODO_FIXED_TAG
# update compose file
image: TODO_IMAGE:TODO_FIXED_TAG
Config hardening
# Example: disable vulnerable remote access path
TODO_ENABLE_PPP_EAP_TLS=false
# Example: restrict exposure
TODO_BIND_ADDRESS=127.0.0.1
# Example: allow only trusted peers
TODO_ALLOWED_CIDRS=10.0.0.0/8,192.168.0.0/16
Minimal code fix pattern — validate length before copying network data into heap buffers:
// Before copying EAP-TLS payload into a heap buffer
if (payload_len > MAX_EAP_TLS_PAYLOAD || payload_len > dst_capacity) {
return ERROR_INVALID_PACKET;
}
memcpy(dst, payload, payload_len);
Detection & Verification
Check whether you are vulnerable:
# Search installed package versions
npm ls TODO_PACKAGE
python -m pip show TODO_PACKAGE
mvn dependency:tree | grep TODO_PACKAGE
./gradlew dependencies | grep TODO_PACKAGE
dpkg -l | grep TODO_PACKAGE
rpm -qa | grep TODO_PACKAGE
# Search configs and code for PPP / EAP-TLS exposure
grep -RniE "EAP-TLS|PPP|remote access|TODO_FEATURE_FLAG" /etc /opt /srv 2>/dev/null
grep -RniE "TODO_PACKAGE|TODO_MODULE_NAME" .
Use dependency auditors:
npm audit
pip-audit
mvn -q dependency:tree
./gradlew dependencyCheckAnalyze
Verify the fix:
# Confirm the upgraded version is installed
npm ls TODO_PACKAGE
python -m pip show TODO_PACKAGE
dpkg -l | grep TODO_PACKAGE
rpm -qa | grep TODO_PACKAGE
# Confirm the service is no longer exposed
ss -lntp | grep TODO_SERVICE
curl -vk https://TODO_HOST:TODO_PORT/health
If you have a staging environment, replay a known-good authentication flow and confirm the service remains stable under normal and malformed input rejection. Also confirm logs show the patched version or build number after restart.
Risk and Impact
This flaw can allow a remote attacker to crash the service or, in the worst case, run arbitrary code with the privileges of the affected process. For small teams, that can mean loss of availability, credential exposure, lateral movement, or full host compromise if the service runs with elevated permissions.
The blast radius depends on where PPP EAP-TLS is used: a network appliance, VPN gateway, embedded device, or backend service exposed to untrusted clients is at highest risk. If the service is internet-facing, treat this as a same-day fix.
