CVE-2026-95731 Security Alert: CRITICAL Vulnerability
Urgent: CVE-2026-95731 requires immediate attention.
· 8 min read
Executive Summary
CVE-2026-95731 is a critical authentication flaw in the command-line interface of HPE Networking Fabric Composer. The issue involves hardcoded credentials that could let an unauthenticated remote attacker log in and obtain administrative access with elevated privileges. Even though there is no known exploitation in the wild and it is not in CISA KEV, the severity is CVSS 9.8, which means this should be treated as an emergency for any environment exposing the product.
If you run Fabric Composer in a lab, on a management network, or as part of a small team’s infrastructure, assume the blast radius includes full control of the affected management plane, including configuration changes, credential theft, and potential pivoting into connected network devices.
Immediate Action
- Isolate the system now: restrict access to the Fabric Composer management interface and CLI to a trusted admin subnet or VPN only. If possible, remove public exposure immediately.
- Apply the vendor fix as soon as HPE publishes a patched release. If you do not yet have a confirmed safe version, use a temporary compensating control and track the advisory: HPE Security Advisory / Vendor advisory page.
- Rotate any credentials that may have been stored, exposed, or reused on this system, including admin passwords, API keys, SSH keys, and service account secrets.
- Review logs for suspicious logins, especially from unexpected IPs, new admin sessions, or CLI access outside normal maintenance windows.
- Take a rollback-ready backup before upgrading, so you can revert quickly if the patch disrupts automation or integrations.
- Temporarily disable the vulnerable CLI path if the product supports it, or place the management host behind a jump box with MFA.
Affected Versions

Resolution Guide
Important: This issue is in a vendor appliance/platform, so the fix is likely delivered as a product update rather than a package-manager upgrade. Use the commands below only if your deployment includes containerized, scripted, or bundled components that you control.
# Linux package update workflow
sudo apt update
sudo apt install --only-upgrade hpe-fabric-composer # TODO: replace with actual package name
sudo yum update hpe-fabric-composer # TODO: replace with actual package name
# Docker image update workflow
docker pull hpe/fabric-composer:TODO-safe-tag
docker stop fabric-composer
docker rm fabric-composer
docker run -d --name fabric-composer hpe/fabric-composer:TODO-safe-tag
# Java dependency examples if the vulnerable component is embedded
mvn versions:use-latest-releases
mvn dependency:tree | grep -i fabric-composer
./gradlew dependencies | grep -i fabric-composer
# Python environment checks if wrapped by automation
pip list | grep -i fabric-composer
pipx list | grep -i fabric-composer
# JavaScript ecosystem checks if you have a management wrapper or helper package
npm ls | grep -i fabric-composer
yarn why fabric-composer
pnpm why fabric-composer
npm i TODO-package@TODO-safe-version
Hardening steps:
# Restrict management access at the host firewall
sudo ufw allow from 10.0.0.0/24 to any port 443 proto tcp
sudo ufw deny 443/tcp
# Or with iptables
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 443 -s 10.0.0.0/24 -j ACCEPT
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 443 -j DROP
# Example: disable an exposed admin service if your deployment supports it
export FABRIC_COMPOSER_DISABLE_CLI=true # TODO: confirm supported flag
systemctl restart fabric-composer
Minimal code fix pattern if you maintain a wrapper or fork: remove any embedded credentials and force secrets to come from a secure store.
// BAD: hardcoded credential
const adminPassword = "changeme";
// GOOD: load from secret manager or environment
const adminPassword = process.env.FABRIC_COMPOSER_ADMIN_PASSWORD;
if (!adminPassword) {
throw new Error("Missing admin password");
}
Detection & Verification
Check whether you have the vulnerable product and whether it is exposed to untrusted networks.
# Identify installed version
fabric-composer --version 2>/dev/null || /opt/hpe/fabric-composer/bin/fabric-composer --version
# Search for hardcoded credential patterns in local configs/scripts
grep -RniE "password|passwd|admin|hardcoded|default credential" /opt/hpe /etc 2>/dev/null
# Check listening ports and exposure
ss -lntp | grep -E ':(443|8443|22)\s'
Dependency and image verification:
# Container image digest check
docker image inspect hpe/fabric-composer:TODO-safe-tag --format '{{.Id}}'
# SBOM / package audit if available
syft hpe/fabric-composer:TODO-safe-tag
grype hpe/fabric-composer:TODO-safe-tag
Verify the fix:
# Confirm the upgraded version matches the vendor's fixed build
fabric-composer --version
# Confirm the old vulnerable build is gone from images or packages
docker images | grep -i fabric-composer
rpm -qa | grep -i fabric-composer
dpkg -l | grep -i fabric-composer
Also test access from a non-admin network segment. A patched system should no longer accept unauthorized CLI access, and default or embedded credentials should not work.
Risk and Impact
If exploited, this flaw can give an attacker full administrative control of HPE Networking Fabric Composer without valid credentials. That can expose network topology, configuration data, and secrets, and may allow the attacker to change policies or use the management plane as a pivot into connected infrastructure.
For solo developers and small teams, the biggest risk is not just downtime: it is silent compromise of the control layer. If this system manages production networking, assume the attacker could disrupt service, intercept administrative workflows, and persist through configuration changes until the host is rebuilt and credentials are rotated.
